About Torch Lake, MI - Happy to be your hometown Heating & Air Conditioning Contractor!
The 31 kilometers long and 3.2 kilometers wide, Torch Lake is the longest lake in Michigan and covers about 76 square kilometers. This inland lake is surrounded by many townships including Central Lake Township, Helena Township, Clearwater Township, Milton Township, Torch Lake Township etc. It is located about 27 kilometers northeast of Traverse City and is an excellent spot for fishing. It is also famous for the wide range of fishes you can catch here such as salmon, rainbow trout, brown trout, yellow perch, smallmouth bass, Pike, whitefish etc.
The name of the lake is not because of its shape. It is, in fact, derived from the Ojibwa name “Was-wa-gon-ong” which means “Place of the Torches” which referred to the practice of the Native Americans who used to attract fishes using torches to catch them at night. The lake is also famous for many thrilling activities such as canoeing, diving, water sports, hiking etc.
The Torch Lake Township is a part of the Antrim County in the state of Michigan and is home to 1,194 people according to the 2010 census. The town covers a total area of 54.7 square kilometers of which 15.6 square kilometers is water while the remaining 39.1 square kilometers is land. The racial markup of the town is 0.09% Asian, 0.78% African American, 96.98% White, 0.17% Native American, 2.50% Latino or Hispanic and 1.04% other races.
The town offers natural scenic beauty, which attracts tourists from many parts of the world. It is famous for the clear water lake and historic places. The climate of the area is, however, not very appealing and requires almost all the houses, offices and stores to have an air conditioning system installed as without one such system, the weather could become very disturbing. So if you plan on going to Torch Lake, make sure you stay in a hotel/motel where there is an air conditioning system installed.
